May Open Mic!

Don’t forget, May’s Open Mic Night will be Saturday (tomorrow!) May 28th, in honor of the Meet and Greet SMYRC is having with the Oregon Bears, a gay men’s group who has chosen us to be their beneficiary this summer for their annual Beartown weekend.

Come hang out with the Bears starting at 7pm (SMYRC will still be opening at 4pm) and get onstage for Open Mic around 7:30/8pm! You can perform, watch your friends perform and watch some of the Bears perform!

(And tonight at SMYRC, come for a relaxing Spa Night with Molly’s class from PSU! Get your nails fancified, your hair done and come eat some food with us! 6-9pm)

Write for the new SMYRC newsletter!

Do you have stories about SMYRC, being a young queer person in Portland, or other thoughts, poems, stories or writing you want to share?

Write about coming out! Write about your experiences at the Oregon Queer Youth Summit! Write about starting up a GSA in your high school! Write about whatever you think the world should know about YOU.

SMYRC is looking for folks to write for the new SMYRC newsletter that is going to be starting in July!

Coming up at SMYRC!

Saturday, May 14th

Registration is closed, but you can still show up to attend the Oregon Queer Youth Summit! Held in the Portland State University Smith Memorial Student Union from 8:30 am to 5:30pm.

Then, from 7-11pm, come to SMYRC’s annual Queer Prom, also held in the Smith Memorial Student Union at Portland State University.

Both of these events are free!

(SMYRC drop in will still have it’s regular hours from 4-9pm that night.)

Wednesday, May 18th

Want to do a paid radio internship with Outside In’s Guerrilla Theatre? Attend the SEXChat workshop that they’re putting on at SMYRC on May 18th at 6pm to qualify! (Steering Committee will not be happening that day as regularly scheduled.)

And looking ahead to May’s Open Mic Night:

This month’s Open Mic Night will NOT be held on the last Friday (May 27th) as is usually scheduled. Instead, Open Mic Night will be happening the next night (Saturday, May 28th) and will be a Meet ‘n’ Greet with the Oregon Bears . SMYRC is the recipient for the money raised at this year’s Beartown! Come show your appreciation, perform for the Bears, and encourage some of them to get up on stage as well!

And make sure to register ASAP so that they’ll have food for you! FREE food, FREE workshops (you even get a $5 gift card for staying the whole day), PRICELESS time with other queer youth and allies!

The summit is taking place at Portland State University’s Smith Memorial Student Union in downtown Portland at 1825 Southwest Broadway. It’s accessible by MAX trains and bus lines.

The conference starts at 8:30am and goes until 5pm.

But what can I do after the Oregon Queer Youth Summit?

Come to the SMYRC Prom, which is also taking place at Portland State University!

This year, the annual SMYRC Prom will be Victorian themed, but come dressed up (or down) how ever you want!

There will be a photobooth, (even more!) free food, prize giveaways, and of course: dancing!

The dance is from 7pm to 11pm in the Smith Memorial Student Union building in the Park Avenue North ballroom.
