A Fond Farewell

May 29, 2012

Hello fabulous SMYRCers,

My 4 years at SMYRC have been some of the most wonderful, fabulous, silly and glitter filled years of my life. I have learned so much from all of you, been excited and challenged by the conversations we’ve all shared at SMYRC, seen some of the best drag shows and open mics in the world and have had countless hours of cooking experiments, awesome Steering Committees, free-pile fashion shows, rowdy games of Apples to Apples and more hair salon experience than I ever thought I would have. Thank you all for being so incredibly important to me, to each other and to queer communities. It is with all of these magical, life-altering experiences tucked into my heart that I share with you that my last day at SMYRC will be on June 23rd. I am leaving so grateful for this time we’ve all had together.

To celebrate the time I’ve had here, my gratitude and deep respect for all of you, and your amazing performance skills, we’ll be having a going away party/open mic night at SMYRC on Friday, June 22nd from 7-10pm. I would love to see you all there!

This weekend at SMYRC!

April 25, 2012

Two great events happening this weekend at SMYRC!

Friday, April 27th
Open Mic Night!

Come share your performance talents and watch the talents of your fellow SMYRCers! Sign up starts at 7:30pm!

Saturday, April 28th
A Night with the Riders: Screening of "Equality U," a Meet and Greet and Art Exhibit Finale

Soulforce is “committed to freedom for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people from religious and political oppression through relentless nonviolent resistance.” They are a group who are traveling across the country in hopes of spreading the message of love. Often times, queer peoples find themselves amidst hypocrisy, hatred, and prejudice in private, religious institutions. We are told to change or remain silent. Well, the Equality Riders have put together a wonderful documentary on giving our community voice! They do not want to pit themselves against these religious schools, but rather want to get religious leaders involved with our community. They are trying to bring awareness to the religious versus queers “dilemma,” and we want you to be part of it!

The night will begin at 6pm with screening of Equality U excerpts. A Q&A session with the riders will follow around 7:30. This is your chance to ask questions on how they got involved, their own personal coming out stories, how you can get involved, or whatever else you can think of! The night will end with a rocking dance party under our new disco balls and plenty of food to go around!

Everyone is invited! Tell your friends, coworkers, and fellow folk!
